Singer/guitarist/songwriter (E) experienced many upheavals in his personal life between albums (the passing of several family members and close friends), and decided to work his way through lifes tribulations via his music. The result is a spectacular epic work, easily on par with such classic albums cut from the same cloth -- Neil Youngs Tonights The Night, Lou Reeds Magic And Loss, etc. For some of the most introspective and haunting tunes of recent times, look no further than the title track, Last Stop: This Town, and Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor. And although the lyrics deal almost entirely with mortality, the music for Hospital Food, Cancer for the Cure, and Going to Your Funeral Part I is comparable to Becks funky noise, while Efils God, The Medication Is Wearing Off, and My Descent Into Madness are all ethereal, soothing compositions. 2004.6.16 ¡¾É«Äñ¼­Â¼vol 16¡¿The Essex Green: Long Goodbye -----------------------------------------------------.spun Released: April 08, 2003 Label: Merge Genre: Chamber Pop , Indie Pop , Neo-Psychedelia Reviews: The Essex Greens second album continued in the Elephant 6 spirit of their debut (although it came out on Merge, not Elephant 6): music highly reminiscent of pop-psychedelia of the last half of the 1960s, though not slavishly revivalist. Its the vibe of those times (and much more the pop than the psych) that informs the record, rather than the aping of specific formulas. At the same time, comparisons to those vintage days are going to be inevitable, and theres a little bit of a pastiche feel to the result, though its brought off with upbeat wit. Certainly the arcing pop/rock harmonics of Badfinger and the Beach Boys are echoed in one of the better cuts, the opening By the Sea. A Moe Tucker-type drum pattern helps make The Late Great Cassiopia sound a little like the Velvet Underground gone power pop, Lazy May has a little bit of Lee Hazlewoods oddball cowboy pop/rock, Old Dominion fuses late-60s country-rock Byrds with the cheesy exotica of early-60s Joe Meek productions, and Berlin sounds like it might have been cut after some intense listening to psych-folk-rockers Kaleidoscopes Please. Indeed, theres a great deal of variety to the record, something that sets them apart from the vast majority of the bands that pay homage to the 60s, but also something that keeps them from developing a distinct identity. One way to do that might have been to give more emphasis to the lead vocals of Sasha Bell, whose confidently cheery style makes her by far the best singer in the group.

Yes, their fellow Glasgow residents Belle & Sebastian are a huge influence on the group as the two share a similar musical sound, a similarly literate lyrical slant, and a similar overall approach. Look at it as a homage or a coincidence or whatever you like, but be sure to look past the surface because what you will find is enough to charm your socks off. Underachievers Please Try Harder is a stunningly unassuming, tender, sweet, melodic, and memorable record. Tracyanne Campbells vocals are pure and honeyed, never veering into sappiness or out of tune. The band manages the rare feat of sounding full and rich without jamming every possible frequency with sound. It also throws in loads of imaginative little hooks that keep things lively. The songwriting is very nice, occasionally reaching the level of their idols work. A Sisters Social Agony is angelic doo wop with lovely tinkling bells, Teenager is a sparse ballad with wonderfully cutting lyrics, and the quietly epic Books Written for Girls features Campbells most aching vocal and sounds like the best track Everything but the Girl never recorded. Elsewhere the band takes trips into country (Before You Cry with co-lead vocals by John Henderson and Campbell), acoustic folk balladry (Your Picture), and good old indie pop (the driving Number One Son) while never failing to achieve anything less than excellence. A necessary addition to the collection of Belle & Sebastian fans, indie pop fans, and music lovers, Underachievers Please Try Harder is an early contender for a best-of-2004 list. 2004.6.21 ¡¾É«Äñ¼­Â¼vol 21¡¿Damien Rice - O (2003) ----------------------------------------------- Label: Vector Recordings Genre: Alternative Folk , Contemporary Folk , Contemporary Singer/Songwriter , Folk-Rock , Post-Grunge Reviews: Magnificently packaged in a CD-sized hardcover book filled with personal artwork, lyrics, and photos, Damien Rices debut full-length, O, is nothing less than a work of genius, a perfect cross between Ryan Adams and David Gray and a true contender for one of the best albums of 2003. This Irish singer/songwriter works with impassioned folk songs that move from stripped-down to grandly orchestrated in a heartbeat. The production is reminiscent of Songs of Leonard Cohen -- simple guitars, vocals, and then those swelling strings, all of which sound like they were recorded right in the same room. Rice is master of what critic/ranter Richard Meltzer called "the unknown tongue" -- basically the musical equivalent of the "punctum" in photos, its that thing that grabs a hold of you, the detail that makes it happen. For example, on Delicate the strings lift the spare folk song to the heavens at just the moment that makes the song soar -- Meltzer might call it the "folk tongue" or maybe even the "epic tongue." The magnificent, melancholy, optimistic, longing, almost magical The Blowers Daughter comes in immediately as the previous song, Volcano, ends -- same thing with the song that follows -- which gives the album a broad, operatic quality. The gentle Cannonball, the bright strumming and surreal feedback on Amie, the distant piano and oceanic harmonies (not to mention drowning, backwards vocals) on the duet, {"Cold Water"} -- the entire record makes the empty highway less lonely, the sunshine a little warmer, and life a little more poetic. Then theres the actual opera singer doing backup vocal duties on Eskimo -- a song of redemption that is Syd Barrett, is Skip Spence, is Grandaddy and is Mercury Rev and everything that implies. These guys definitely have more in common, sonically speaking, with Cat Stevenss quasi-folk rock than they do with the Western rock n roll on which the majority of their peers cut their teeth. Tasteful songwriting, which revolves mostly around acoustic guitars, piano and subtle drumming, helps Edson to avoid sounding dated. A few tracks, such as "Minus Minus Equals Plus" and "Infrared Heating", rely more on electrified guitars for a modern jangle-pop feel, but the band is at their best on understated cuts like "And Then She Flung Me to the Truth" and "Sunny Days". These songs focus primarily on vocals and piano, and singer Pelle Carlburg conveys a wealth of emotion without relying on histrionics. The groups gentle, nuanced songwriting and surprisingly well-layered song structures yield surprisingly memorable hooks. As a result, Every Day, Every Second comes across as a truly honest and heartfelt album -- "emo" in the strictest sense of the term, but in a good way.

2004.7.2 ¡¾É«Äñ¼­Â¼vol 32¡¿Of Montreal: Aldhils Arboretum ----------------------------------------------------------- from internet: Released: September 10, 2002 Label: Kindercore Genre: Indie Pop , Neo-Psychedelia Reviews: Intended as an "album of singles" in favor of diminishing their normal proclivities toward conceptual grandiosity and musical adventurousness, Aldhils Arboretum marks a peculiar change of pace for Elephant 6s most prolific popsters. About six songs and 20 minutes shorter than the average Of Montreal outing, the band manages to retain a good deal of their trademark zaniness while producing what might be their most focused and polished work. In fact, the band has never sounded stronger instrumentally as a straightforward retro-rock unit. Big ringing keyboards and wild veering guitar lines color unshakable ear candy like Doing Nothing and Jennifer Louise, both tracks that rank among their most catchy, if not the most innovative, in their extensive catalog. Of course, Kevin Barnes still indulges a bit in his tendency toward obscurely surreal narrative, with both The Blank Husband Epidemic and An Ode to the Nocturnal Muse being unpredictably odd ventures into his unique imagination. Further, even though the intricately playful nature of some of their best songwriting is somewhat muted, Barnes does manage to extend his reputation for gorgeously florid balladry on a few tracks. All in all, even though they dont have an overarching concept to rest under, the set of songs present is undeniably strong and ultimately stamped with all of the important elements that make Of Montreals brand of psychedelic pop so exemplary.
